Biostatin is a spin-off biotechnological company developing novel signal transduction therapy agents. Among the products in pipeline, TT232 has reached clinical phase of development in 2002. This compound is a structural derivative of the natural signal inhibitory peptide, somatostatin with selective anti-proliferative and antiinflammatory properties. Its antiinflammatory action is mediated through the SSTR4 receptor, a novel target in the molecular pharmacology of inflammation. Its anti-tumor activity is mediated through the SSTR1 receptor and by the tumor specific isoform of pyruvate kinase. TT232 has passed phase I clinical trials without toxicity and significant side effects. We finished successfully the first of the planned human phase II efficacy studies in melanoma malignum indication. TT-232 has the perspective to become the first drug in molecularly targeted therapy of inflammation where acombined effect of anti-inflammatory, analgesic and neurogenic inflammation inhibiting activity can be achieved.
